2008 was a rollercoaster of a year for me both individually and by proxy with all that a lot of my friends went through. Births, deaths, near moves, really far moves, relationship changes, friendship changes, perspective changes. I have heard quite a few people say that 2008 was a real pain in the ass and I thought about all those things and realized that they are just like any other year when you get right down to it. At least for me.
There are things that come and go, ebbs and flows, ups and downs, times are flush and thin and the yin-yangish descriptors can go on for days. So what positive will you do for your life in 2009? When things are down and go back up you can't think "Oh, now I'm making progress" because that's the natural order of the sine curve we call life. What will you do to make the lows shallower and highs greater? I'm not talking about resolutions. Resolutions are stupid. They are things you wish you'd do but know you never will, yet hope that a digit change in an arbitrary number like the date will give you magical mythical inspiration.
Back away from the individual item list and look at your life more globally. Maybe you want to be more patient as a whole. Maybe you want to study more or make more money. Just remember... do NOT ever use the negative. Don't say you want to get rid of debt - say you want to increase wealth. You don't want to lose weight, you want to get fit or healthy. You don't want to be less negative... you want to be more positive. You're trying to bring your life up in one way or another or multiple so... use words that point that direction. Use positive words.
I don't want to stop fighting with my parents about staying in the military. I want there to be peace and support and understanding within my family about it. I don't want money to fix the effects of the current financial crisis (see how awful that sounds?); I want my overall wealth and prosperity to grow and flourish.
Use the new year as a fresh start to changing your life, rather than nitpicking individual items at so lofty a goal that you'll surrender by the end of the month.
Happy New Year to everyone, good luck, take care, keep looking up! And I'm sure we'll "talk" more.
